06/30/08 Elite Thermal Engineering introduces low cost OEM cold plates with dual butterfly mounts Elite Thermal Engineering, a leading supplier for thermoelectric cooling solutions, released a lower cost OEM thermoelectric cold plate Model OCP-050A, and model DBC-050A that consists of one OCP-050A and two butterfly mounts model BA-01. Because of the relatively low power nature of all fiber coupled butterfly laser diodes packages, the cooling capacity of ETE's OCP-055 is never fully utilized when used for butterfly mounts. ETE replaced the expensive copper plates and the expensive high end thermoelectric cooling modules with aluminum cold plate and ETE's own lower cost thermoelectric modules, we are able to bring down the cost significantly while still maintaining enough cooling capacity for two of any high power pump lasers on the market. Butterfly lasers with internal thermoelectric coolers has lower power compare to uncooled packages because of the limit of cooling capacity of internal TECs; Uncooled butterfly lasers provide much higher power that is only limited by the laser diode itself. DBC-050A provides two butterfly mounts for uncooled butterfly lasers, and stabilize the laser with the external TECs. This enables laser developers to use much higher power butterfly lasers while maintaining the temperature of the laser. It provides 110w of cooling capacity when set temperature is same as ambient, and the set temperature can be 48ºC below ambient when heat load is zero. All thermoelectric coolers in the device are environmentally sealed so that OCP-110 can operate reliably at below dew point set temperatures. OCP-110 has a copper cold plate that provides much lower spreading resistance than aluminum. Since our inception, ETE has been focusing on high performance cooling products that provide the highest cooling capacity per unit volume for photonics industry. DBH-022 is designed for 14-pin butterfly pump lasers with integral thermoelectric cooler (TEC) or uncooled 14-pin butterfly packages that don't require temperature stabilization. DBH-022 combines ETE's popular OEM fan mounted heatsink HS-022 with two 14-pin butterfly mounting boards model BA-01 to provide a powerful, convenient and cost effective solution for high power 14-pin butterfly pump lasers testing, burn-in, evaluation or integration into laser products. DBH-022 boasts a low thermal resistance of 0.22ºc/w, which translate to <15ºC temperature rise over ambient when loaded with two most powerful pump lasers on the market. The first model OCP-055 is designed specifically for cooling CS mount laser diodes on either an optical bench for laser research or in OEM laser product developments. The cooling capacity of standard Model OCP-055 exceeds most of the CS mount laser diodes on the market; it can also be optimized to provide higher cooling power with lower temperature difference, or lower cooling power with higher temperature difference with minimal extra cost; The cold plate provides 2 CS mounting locations: one is at the front for using on optical table where free-space optics can be placed very close to the laser diode; another is located at the center of the cold plate for fiber coupled lasers where the cooling is most effective. The cold plate is electrically isolated from the rest of the module, so it is safe to mount CS mount laser diode directly on it, therefore minimizing thermal resistance from laser junction to cold plate. The thermoelectric coolers used in OCP series are all environmentally sealed (TECs in all ETE's products are environmentally sealed) for operations below dew point. ETE's OEM cold plates are also perfect for cooling fiber coupled laser diodes. Model OCP-055 can be easily incorporated into laser products by simply bolting it down to a flat surface in the product. As a by-product of Model OCP-055, ETE is also offering the ready-to-use forced air-cooled heatsink that is used for OCP-055. The cooling module consists of a heatsink, an air duct and a fan with fan guard, all assembled ready to use. It boasts an ultra low thermal resistance of 0.22ºC/w when the heat source is half the size of the heatsink. OCP-055 or the fan/sink cooling module has mounting features for 0.5" diameter mounting posts used on optical table; it also provides mounting flanges for mounting it to any flat surface. The industrial standard CS mount laser diode package for diode pump lasers is electrically hot; when mounted to laser cooling modules or cold plates, the laser diode must be electrically isolated to protect the laser. In the past, individual end users of laser diodes do all the isolation solutions themselves, and it takes engineering effort to define, design and procure the necessary components. Elite Thermal Engineering is now offering standard diode isolation kits that is in stock or can be provided within 2 weeks if it is out of stock. The diode mounting kits includes one aluminum nitride plate and 4 nylon shoulder washers for mounting CS mount or equivalent diodes (such as Jenoptik's JOLD packages) on cold plates. Indium foils for thermal interface is also available as an option. Belleville washers for maintaining constant pressure to the thermal interface are also available as another option. The aluminum nitride plate is .635mm thick, 25mm x 25mm with 4 through holes that match the diode mounting patterns. The nylon shoulder washers fit in the CS mounting holes and are good for M3 screws. The standard kit cost only $ 21.49 each at single quantity. The aluminum nitride plate offers very high thermal conductivity while providing electrical isolation between the diode and cold plate; the nylon washers isolate the metal screws from the diode package. Elite Thermal Engineering also supplies silicone-free high performance thermal interface materials that can be used between the aluminum nitride plate and diode, and between the cold plate and aluminum nitride plate. The nylon shoulder washer does tend to creep over time. Therefore Belleville washers or other kind of spring mechanism to maintain positive pressure is recommended.
